What's on Your Workdesk ~ WOYWW #169

It's WOYWW time again..can you believe it? https://secure.quebles.com/content/hotmail/emoticons/1511766.gif
For new visitors or anyone that hasn't heard of WOYWW (What's on your Workdesk Wednesday) basically it's the day to open your door and let everyone in to see what you're up to...
well on your workdesk that is! It's the brainchild of Julia's blog at Stamping Ground
Visitors can come from all over the world....so be prepared....and get that kettle on!

In previous weeks I've been showing my work from the dining room table, but because I've actually been using my dining table this week as a place to eat...yeah I know fancy that...and I'm not quite back into the studio yet (even though Saturday is officially the start of Spring) I thought I'd do something different this week.
I thought because everyone seems to be amazed at how time fly's...
...I'd stop the clock and take my visitors back in time...back to the '90's!

I've mentioned to a few people during this past week about my time as a silk painting instructor and this photo shows two friends in our workshop. I'm hoping they don't mind me posting this photo of them because I had such fond memories of many hours being creative, inspiring and being inspired in lovely friendly company.
It was a very special time...
I decided to attend the classes initially to learn something new...it was a great way to spend one afternoon a week totally absorbed in doing something just for me!

The silk painting classes were the first workshop I'd ever attended.
As with most expat communities the workshop was run voluntary and was part of the local social club.
I attended the classes for over a two years learning the new techniques and had such a wonderful time...even receiving commissions and the ultimate goal of sharing an exhibition with five other artists!
We even appeared in the local newspaper! LOL
See you didn't know I was a celeb did you?

After two years of learning the techniques the instructor was due to leave (as often happens in an expat community) and I was asked would I like to take over the classes. I had received so much from attending the workshops...how could I refuse...I needed to give back a little but the fact remains I still gained so much.

I couldn't let you go without showing you what I'm working on at the moment.
It's 'Willy Wagtail' (Rhipidura leucophrys) The name wagtail stems from the constant sideways wagging of the tail...which I've tried to capture in my drawing.
I know it's a little scary at the moment due to him not having any feet, but hopefully I'll get to that later today!
I'll come back and post another picture if I do finish him before WOYWW is over.

Remember he's an unfinished piece of work please...
which I don't normally like to show but...hey...I know you now so I reckon it's okay!
His friends the Magpie, Kangaroo and Frog are all in my Etsy shop now...so take a peek if you want to see them up close and personal...just click on the (more) icon...

If you want to see some more artists/crafters desks to check out what everyone's up to...just pop over to Julia's  There's always something to capture your interest or inspire you. I'm sure you'll have a good time and they're a really friendly bunch...
I'd also just like to thank all my new followers and everyone who popped by my place last week and left such lovely comments. I really appreciate you taking the time, but if I didn't make it to your desk I apologise...if only I didn't have to sleep...sigh!

I'll try again ~ promise :D
Have fun and be creative everyone! https://secure.quebles.com/content/hotmail/emoticons/1511763.gif

But I won't give in though! (did you hear my foot stamp then!)
Have a wonderful week...I'll pop by later to see how you are getting on. :D

    1. Hmm...fun....but tricky and certainly not fun if you didn't fix the finished painting correctly as the colours can just run down the sink on the final process!
Thankfully that didn't happen very often but I was always nervous until that part was completed. :D
Thanks for popping by ~ have a great week and enjoy WOYWW! ;D

  7. Looking at your silk painting friends, I can just imagine the mess I would get into playing with something that size :) Mr Willy wagtail is gorgeous. I have a family of them in my garden and they buzz around us all the time, but mine have feet!!! Your Willies tail is superb (ooh, somehow that sounds rude).

How could we know that blogging would take over our lives...or is that just me? ;D
It's funny because this morning on our walk a willy wagtail came right up to us on the grass and chirped away for quite some time. He didn't seem to mind the two dogs either. I think maybe he was trying to tell me to get on with his pals tooties!
Hehe...had to laugh at your last comment :D

    1. It was certainly a challenge being that size but then I always loved to do the large silks myself!
You really have to work quickly to cover the whole piece before it starts to dry...and as we were in the tropics that was quite a task...plus you need to mix enough paint before you start!
Lots of things to take into account but when it works...it's brilliant!
Enjoy your desk hopping and thanks for stopping by. I'll be visiting as soon as I can :D

    1. I'm sure you would be great at silk painting Vickie, ;D
It can be done on so many different levels...from easy with no restrictions of the paint...like letting the paints run into each other and letting them do the work or on a more difficult level restricting the paint and keeping the design as definite images.

I'm not sure if you've seen previous posts about my silk painting but here's a link that show's the easiest use of the paints in making a scarf. The gold pattern was painted on after.

I had a fantastic time learning the process first and then it was great to pass on my knowledge to others. The classes came at such a time when I needed them...and it was great to think that other's would benefit in the same way I had.
Some ladies who came to the class initially didn't think they were artistic or could draw at all, but with silk painting you can keep designs simple and just use the colours...but then as you grow artistically there's such a great deal more you can do...so it was fantastic to see people really amazed and pleased with their work. Very gratifying :D

  37. I'm imagining that Willie has his feet buried in the sand :)
    He's cute!
How cool that you are expert in silk painting ... I love that technique (even though I've never tried it - lol)

    1. Hi Kimmie,
Nope sorry Willie has his feet on grass and leaves but at least he has feet now.
Now I'm not sure I'd call myself an expert in silk painting (hehe)
but it is fun. If you get the chance I'd certainly recommend that you give it a go! ;D
      Have a wonderful weekend!

  38. There is no end to your talent. A silk painting artist too. Those workshops sound amazing and how great to take them over allowing others to learn such an interesting craft.
Love your birdy even without his legs!!!
Happy WOYWW and enjoy the Spring, we seem to be going into Winter now without an Autumn, what a year the UK has endured!!
    Happy WOYWW

    1. Oh my Lisa I'm so sorry to hear about your weather...it really does sound like it's been quite a year.
We've had so much wet weather here too so I think Mother Nature is maybe a little confused.
Thanks for stopping by my place and leaving such lovely comments.
I'm pleased to report the birdy now has legs and scenary around him.
      He seems happy ;D
Happy WOYWW to you too...have fun!

  39. I had no clue you used to be a silk painting instructor...what fun it would have been and what a fantastic medium. I love the pic you shared.

As for Willy Wagtail, he is looking fantastic!! I love to see work-in-progress photos so no worries there.

    Have a fabulous weekend!

P.S. - I'm finally getting back to routine after my surgery so expect to see more of me....yep, I know....a little scary, isn't it?! lol

    1. Well I think it was by default actually Serena....as with any expat community’s people rely heavily on volunteers. I was also an aerobics instructor and had a 'title' whilst I was there!
The title was 'Sunshine Lady' and it was my job to welcome new families baring bouquets of flowers on my visit. Everything was subsidised but volunteers were needed to carry out the tasks. ;D
I'm glad you like a work in progress...but I'm now happy to report Willy is finished!
I'm happy to see you anytime...it's good to hear your surgery is over.
Have a wonderful weekend...whatever you get up to! ;D
