My Sunday Photo... Log splitter

It's something for the boys this week...
Well actually if you're anything like me, then it might also appeal to some girls too.
This is one of my hubbies Christmas pressies and today was it's grand unveiling.
To say my hubby has a wood fetish might be an understatement.
(I think I've mentioned this on my blog before).
He can spend all day collecting, chopping and stacking wood.
His wood store is a masterpiece of 'Jenga' ingenuity.
No one can stack wood like he can.
Or it appears that way, because if anyone tries to add to the pile he has to have the last say by tweaking and fiddling until it's to his specific specification.
Sad but true.
Anyway, I thought that this log splitter would not only save him time, it would also save his back.
He was skeptical at first... insisting that he likes to spend hours using the axe whilst alleviating his stress levels.  (I'm not sure why he gave me a funny look as he said this)
But after splitting a whole wheel barrow full of beautifully chopped logs within fifteen minutes or so... he was convinced it was a winner.
It split the huge chunks of wood like butter.
It seems a little strange to be preparing wood for next winter, when we are only just saying goodbye to this last winter... but he's happy!

As usual I'm linking up with My Sunday Photo
Thanks for visiting my place today and I hope you're enjoying your weekend too.

    1. I think he did once he got into it Victoria,
It certainly cut (pun intended) the time in half for this usually labour and time intensive job.

  2. Very cool, I guess its so much more fun than doing it manually #MySundayPhoto

    1. I'm not so sure because I don't get involved with this side of the job. I just enjoy the end product... sitting in front of a roaring fire. He seems to have fun though.

  3. I heard my husband go on about a similar wood cutter machine when we were over at friends! You've clearly chosen a present that should put a smile on your hubby's face!

    1. I don't think he was particularly sold on the idea to begin with Kriss, but now he's played and cut a huge heap of wood, I think it's won him over. It just sliced through them like butter.

  4. Woah! That looks so complex and a little dangerous to me. Then again, it sounds like it's going to be a well loved, and well used, present!

    1. Nah it's not complex... it's just with the touch of a button.
You obviously have to wear safety glasses just in case but it's safe.
I think it may be a winner :D

  5. That looks like a serious piece of machinery! Still, I suppose it's a gadget of sorts ... :-)

  6. We are also preparing next winter's logs. Something like this would be great here, though my boys like to build their muscles log splitting.

    1. Oh Fiona, it would be perfect for you. I can imagine you must get through quite an amount of logs at your place.
My hubby will still use the axe when he wants to, to tone up because he does like the manual option, but this baby will lighten the load.
Enjoy your Sunday and thanks for stopping by.

  7. I have spent sometime with these beasts of machines, a necessity here,, I think your husband sounds like a smart man,, heat is everything,, fire is life in climates where it gets so cold,, a primal necessity,, I love the smell of the wood,, I have helped split and pile so much wood I can say quite honestly I do not miss that part of my old life,, we just do it now on a small scale,, good thing too,, my back isn't what it used to be ,lol,,, such a great gift that was,,

    1. I bet you have Laurie, especially with your winters.
Yeah he's smart and he has an easier life if I'm warm. I just hate to be cold and he knows it! I've done a fair share of wood splitting, chopping and stacking myself since we arrived back, but I'm backing off now with having a wood fanatic and a butch muscle building son around.
I thought it was a great idea for a gift, but then he didn't seem impressed initially and it stayed wrapped up for three months!
Thankfully now he realises I know best!!! (hehe)

  8. Hi Denise, my husband would be so jealous! He has just finished cutting the wood for the next two winters (or so he hopes), but all he has is a chain saw and an axe!.... On the other hand I'm sure wood cutting is very therapeutic!

    1. Well my hubby only had a chainsaw and an axe for over two years and we've been through two yukky winters and not a very good summer here in Bonnie Scotland. It's such a difference from our days spent living in Australia, so I need the fire for most of the year it seems! Thank goodness we have an Aga and central heating too... but we tend to favour the wood burners. I love to sit and watch them.
My hubby loves to chop the wood and says it's great to de-stress, but we need a lot of wood.

  10. My dearest Denise,
we also are so so busy during this season just in these kinds of works in our woods, while taking care of the gardens just waking up after Winter sleep, and then homeworks, my work at school and ... let's try not to think much about the many things we still have to do, oh my !

Anyway, your new implement is truly wonderful, sweetie, hubby will for sure fall in love with it !

Enjoy your Sunday and your new week ahead, lovely lady,
sending blessings of joy to you

    1. Yes Dany, it can be quite a busy time. Everything is waking up after the winter. I do love this time of year though... it's so full of potential and possibility.
Yes I think the gift has turned out to be a winner after all. I did doubt it initially when I saw it still in the Christmas wrapping paper, tucked away in the corner of the garage... but it's now come out into the light!
I hope you're having a wonderful weekend too and have a great new week to come.

  11. Sounds like it makes log splitting a lot easier - I think my father-in-law has something similar for doing this too. Glad to hear that your hubby likes his new piece of machinery :-)

    1. I believe there are different levels of splitting machinery. This baby was a the big end because we do use a lot of large chunky logs.
I didn't want to buy one then need to upgrade because we needed something with a lot more 'umph!

    1. He's even wearing his lumberjack shirt today Wren. He looks like he's come straight out of the woods!
As you know life can be unbearable if my tootsies aren't toasting, so it's in his own interest to have a full log store ready for every eventuality.

  14. Cool machine! My first concern was he has it on a skinny feeble sawhorse quite high off the ground. Hope it doesn't jerk around and fall on him. Sorry Neesie, I've worked around big tools and machines for so many years safety always comes to mind first. Good to see some sunshine in your neck of the world. :) Have a wonderful day! Hugs

    1. Now Nan, he's taken on board what you've said, but I have to say in his defence he is know here as Captain Safe. The machine was very stable, but he agrees with you that it shouldn't be so high.
Plans afoot to change the layout for the next session.
Thanks for voicing your concerns... it's appreciated as is the sun that's started to call on us. I've craved spring and finally I think it's here.

    1. It certainly will... he can use the axe as a when he likes, but the heavy work load will certainly be lighter with this machine.

  17. well it certainly is convenient to be married to someone who loves wood, with the AGA and all, lol. He knows how to keep a warm home, right? Which is great. Good for you for saving his back, gotta keep him healthy for many years to come.

    1. We didn't even know he had such a fettish before we got the wood burner Jenn,
The Aga is run on gas, but the wood burner is very hungry and eats wood by the ton. It's very greedy especially during winter.
He knows that if I'm cold I can be very moody... okay I can be a real pain!!!

  18. hubby saw this and said "but using an ax to cut wood is fun!" ;p I just liked the fact it gave him nice arm muscles :p

    1. Yes my hubby totally agrees Jennifer, but we use so much it would take him all week to chop enough logs, so I thought I'd help by lightening the load.
He'll still use the chainsaw and axe, but not be so pressurized to cut it all himself. He's not getting any younger!

    1. Well I have to admit that I've had a go Sherry, I just couldn't resist!
It's so easy and after you get over the initial loud noise of the first log splitting ... it's a doddle. (yep I literally jumped)
I'm not so sure he loves it yet, as he does enjoy chopping the wood with his axe, but it is going to make life easier.
We do go through a lot of wood.

I think everyone should have one handy!
