Melbourne Laneways Graffiti... PPF

Something a little different for you this week.
Once again, it's unfortunately not my own work... it's been that kind of week once again.
The weather has been reasonably good, so I've been busy outdoors.
Although having said that I have managed to do some art, but I can't show it here, as the person who it is intended for might see it before the grand unveiling.
Anyway... on to today's exhibit.
It's travelling back in time to our days in Melbourne and this canvas shows one of the many Melbourne Laneways.
This one is completely full of graffiti.
Graffiti is often a controversial subject because some visualise it as pure vandalism, whilst others a form of modern art.
Here in the Lanes it seem right.
I personally hate to see peoples names scrolled on railway bridges or randomly painted on the side of a beautiful buildings etc... but here in these lanes provision has been made and it makes quite a spectacular sight.
I'm afraid that I can't give the photographer credit for this work as I can't quite work out the signature. Maybe you can?
Al fresco eateries, one-off shops and cosy little bars all nestle side-by-side in Laneways threading throughout the city.
If you'd like to see more type 'Melbourne Laneways' into your search engine under Images and you will be able to see these popular areas. (or click here)
I've borrowed this canvas from my son's bedroom and I apologise for the quality of the photo.
It's difficult to get the image to look like the original.
The canvas texture shows through.
I purchased the print at the Melbourne St.Kilda Sunday market and my son immediately requested it when he saw it. I think he may have dabbled himself in the past.
I will be linking up as usual with Kristin and Eva over at Paint Party Friday link up
Thanks ladies for hosting such an inspiring linky.
Enjoy your Friday and thanks for stopping by.

I would just like to add my thanks to Alexandra over at bluechairdiary blog for picking my design for  her Sunday Sketches competition. Alexandra is moving over from the US to England for a temporary period and wanted her link to Sunday Sketches to reflect that it is being hosted from England.
Please tap on the logo in my side bar to nip across to see lots of Alexandra's brilliant illustration work, but also lots of other artists too.
Have fun!

  2. I love this! I'm a fan of proper street art a la Banksy and the surprise art I discovered in the remote cottage ruin last week but, like you, I hate just people's names or sectarian slogans which your see a lot of in Northern Ireland. This is colourful and fab though!

    1. That cottage was amazing Nic, and yes I thoroughly agree with you... I too hate people's names etc just randomly scrawled everywhere.
But this is different. An specially allocated area that tourists flock to visit.

    1. Aww Erika... you say the nicest things. Well the good weather seems to have disappeared. As I type the rain is pouring down, but I did enjoy the warmer weather and hopefully I will again... soon!

    1. I think so too Rita, although like most big city's there are lots of graffiti in and around the city. Although if you are caught vandalising anywhere else then there are heavy fines!

    1. It's very striking isn't it Fran? It looks great on my son's bedroom wall. Perfect to have graffiti, but on a picture and not on the walls!

  10. I love and admire a good graffiti artist! We had a skate park wall covered in gorgeous graffiti art but the city had a zero graffiti tolerance and painted it over! Instead of working with the kids to create something beautiful in an appropriate designated place they squashed any idea of that! All spray paint is locked up at Micheals too! Have you seen the Banksy movie? It's just another form of artistic expression. I only have a problem with it when it destroys property. For the most part I think it enhances so many ugly parts of town! Thanks for sharing!

    1. It seems right to have graffiti in a skate park... how narrow minded of the city not to keep the designated area. I suppose they might have been concerned it might have encouraged more and over spilling into inappropriate areas. I think that may well happen as it always does.
I think someone was very creative using these Laneways in the city centre... they have brought in tourists who will then spend money in the shops, restaurants and bars.
I haven't seen the Banksy movie... must put it on my list.

    1. They are a brilliant way to use the narrow lanes. They really brighten them up and add another feature to the tourists list to check out.

  12. very colourful art to have :) I'm of two minds about graffiti, not s fan of just tagging your name but I have seen some nice work that if it was on a canvas would be considered art

    1. I'm the same Jennifer, I hate to see a scrawled name or statement on a beautiful newly painted architectural building... but here in the lanes it seem right.

  13. I say its art (unless of course they're arting up my property). I think the canvas makes for a fine photo, it has a funky texture I like. I also like the idea of a work of art made from a work of art that's then photographed.

    1. The photo looks great on the canvas, I just didn't feel that the photograph I took did it justice.
I would flip if someone decided to paint my garage door (as I have seen) or a wall to my property too, but the lanes look great. They've really brought them to life.

  14. I've lived in Melbourne, too! Quite some years ago and I probably wouldn't recognize a thing. My opinion about graffiti - it can be great art and there are great artists out there doing it (like you show us here), but then there are vandals = no art. I guess there is a fine or not so fine line between art and vandalism in this case.

    1. Well fancy that Claudia. I had a great time living there.
I think exactly the same over graffiti... there is art and then there's vandalism. These lanes are definitely arty!

  15. Art is expression. He it good bad who's to say..it's all subjective. I admire it done well though I am not a banksy fan I do appreciate what he does.

  16. Yes, in the right spot, graffiti can be quite lovely, colourful and creative. In the wrong spot, it's just ugly vandalism.

    1. Yes I thoroughly agree with you. These Lanes are just perfect for the graffiti, as it's given the whole area a new life and brings visitors and tourists into the area.
