My Sunday Photo... Sparrowhawk

Oh how time flies at this time of year...which brings me nicely to My Sunday Photo today.
I finally managed to capture an image of the sparrowhawk that visits our garden from time to time.
It's been a tough week weather wise for all of the wild birds, with snow flurries and icy conditions.
Our bird feeding stations have had to be replenished daily.
Hence the regular visits from the sparrowhawk... who has been keeping a close eye on proceedings.
Thankfully I've not witnessed any blood shed so far.
I'm surprised that I was able to capture any image as I just can't help but get very excitable when such a visitor appears.

Happy Sunday everyone and thanks for popping by my place.

  1. What a beautiful little bird and really quite camouflage in the winter branches.

    1. He is certainly beautiful but really quite ruthless too. The speed in which he swoops in and chases his prey is quite breathtaking.
It is really difficult to get a sense of his proportion, because he is really quite large.

    1. I thought so until you catch sight of a true wildlife photographer for lets say the RSPB and then I realise that I've got much to learn.
Thanks for your visit and I wish you a great Sunday

    1. But he is ruthless in his pursuit of dinner Dad. It's quite spectacular to watch him fly with such speed and agility, so you can imagine my surprise when he came to rest in our tree :D

    1. He certainly has John. We've had him visit quite a few times with the freezing weather we've been experiencing. I have been wanting to capture him on camera for quite some time.

    1. Our bird feeders (3 stations dotted around our property) have needed replenishing once a day. Thankfully I've found a brilliant reliable bird feed supplier who so far has never let me down!

    1. Thanks Carol... I was really pleased as I've been trying to capture him on camera for quite some time. He is normally so quick I don't even manage to get my camera in my hand...never mind clicking for the shot!

  8. I know the hawk has to eat, too, but it's always hard to see. Not much meat on a small bird but beggars can't be choosers when the weather is what it is. I bet he'd much rather catch a mouse or a rabbit coming for seed pickings at dusk. ;)

    1. I'm amazed that he doesn't target the slower wood pigeons Rita. They very often are oblivious of what's happening around them and there's plenty of meat on them.
I agree I don't like to see them make a successful killing, but realise they too need to eat and most of the time they're unsuccessful.
It's tough out there especially in the winter months.

    1. Thanks Sue, I have seen the odd kill, but thankfully the sparrowhawk heads off into the woods to enjoy his meal, so we don't actually have to witness too much.
Most of the time he makes a mad dash but the little swift birds are so swift and dash into the undergrowth etc out of his reach!
Have a wonderful festive time and thanks for visiting once again

  12. Oh isn't he or she gorgeous! I have never see a Sparrow Hawk. We do have Hawks here in Northern Florida. Blessings to you for keeping the birds well fed. Winter is hard on our feathered friends. I guess your birds have a water source too!
    Merry Christmas Denise!!
