Let me introduce you to Britian's most popular bird... The Robin.
As I carried out the laborious task of picking up the millions of fallen leaves in our garden yesterday, I suddenly became aware of some tiny cute bird chatter.
I noticed these two Robin's having a kind of conversation.
It sounded like nothing I've ever heard before.
Not the usual song or chirps... it sounded like a real conversation.

Not the usual song or chirps... it sounded like a real conversation.
As they flew past me I dropped my rake and grabbed my camera only to witness something I've never seen before.
The one robin squeezed into the wall cavity and stayed there, whilst the other strutted his/her stuff on top of the wall.
It was quite bizarre to watch and I'm not sure if they were having a territorial battle which the robins are renowned for...or whether one was not taken with the others advances!
It didn't seem like aggression and really quite cute to watch.
They stayed talking to one another for a quite some time before the one inside the wall made a quick escape and flew off only to have the other quickly follow.
As winter approaches the robin's song resonates around the garden and really is quite delightful.
Here's a video just in case you might not be familiar with our native favourite.

Thanks for visiting my place and I hope to see you again soon.
Have a great weekend everyone
Aw they are such friendly birds watching over all that goes on. I've been trying to capture one this week but it always flies off just as I get it in focus!
ReplyDeleteMy ambition is to have one feed from my hand. This years babies seem to be quite tame, so who knows? Wish me luck!
DeleteIt's a happy chirping, nice photos too!
ReplyDeleteThanks Christine, we have quite a few robins visit us but I'd never heard this kind of chatter before.
DeleteHi Neesie, what an interesting thing to witness. It doesn't strike me as part of a mating ritual. Unless she really wasn't interested and was making it quite clear.

No I don't think any of the conversation was heated... since then I've been wondering if it was a parent robin telling the youngster that it was time to spread it's wings?
DeleteHow amazing to have seen the two robins communicating. I did watch the video too and I'm glad I did. You've taught me all about the robin's bird song!
ReplyDeleteI'm thrilled you enjoyed the video John. It was definitely an unusual conversation...but I suppose I'll never know what it was about :/
DeleteNever tier of seeing pictures of Robin. Beautiful birds #MySundayPhoto
ReplyDeleteMe too Martin...but then I love lots of our native birds. I really missed them when living overseas.
DeleteLovely birds, I love seeing them in the garden
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up
We are lucky as our numbers of robins seem to be rising. I love them too.
DeleteThanks for hosting once again. Have a great week :D
They're cute and must be nice company in the garden
ReplyDeleteThey certainly are Carol. They are very interested in all that you do in the garden, and even sometimes come near for a closer inspection!
DeleteDo you think one of them was a bit like a pepe le pew robin? That one hiding away really made me smile. Wonder what happened after they flew away :)
ReplyDeleteIf one was Pepé Le Pew he wasn't getting the right response from the other. They flew into a nearby bush but from there I don't know what happened. I like to think they found love eventually...even if it wasn't with each other!
DeleteHow cute they are! Your robins look so very different from our robins here. Makes you wonder what they were discussing--LOL!
ReplyDeleteI know that our robins are different from the American and Australian robin. That's why I thought it would be good to include the video clip in case anyone was interested in hearing the difference too.
DeleteRobins are my favourite! #mysundayphoto
ReplyDeleteI think they might be mine too...although I love blackbirds, thrush, bluetits and many more. If you asked me to only name one, I couldn't. It would be like picking a favourite child...it's just not going to happen!
Deletewhat gorgeous little creatures. at the moment we just have lots of big birds around like currawongs and crows and magpies and kookaburras. I miss the little ones. hope all is well with you. It's getting hot here as we head into summer. cheers S.
ReplyDeleteOh I remember them well... so distinctive calls and songs, especially the magpies and kookaburras. I can definitely say that it's not getting hot here Sherry...except when we have to wood burners blasting out heat. Stay cool :D
DeleteSuch cute pictures! I have to say I'm not massively into birds but robins are definitely my favourite. There's always one that hangs around in the garden when we're out there, such friendly little birds #mysundayphoto
ReplyDeleteHmm... now I'm trying to think what bird that might possibly be?
DeleteYou'll have to give me a description and then I might be able to tell you what it is.
How strange but interesting. And you saw it all! Lucky you. Does make one wonder what was going on, though. Now we'll never know....the plot thickens. ;)
ReplyDeleteNope we'll never know. I am thinking lots of different scenario's. My latest is that they were siblings as they both looked like new additions this year. I was thrilled that I managed to capture him/her hiding in the wall :D
DeleteHow lovely you saw this different behaviour! Robins are so sweet aren't they. Lovely photos :D)
ReplyDeleteI'm beginning to think because it's not the right time of year or the chatter wasn't aggressive that they might have been young siblings. They both look like newly matured birds. Maybe this years young. Anyway... glad you liked the photos :D
Deleteone flew into the window the other day. pretty loud thump but thankfully he/she just shook its head and flew off after a few minutes. of course I didnt have my phone near me to take a photo lol
ReplyDeletethose are great photos! :)
Thanks Jennifer, I was pleased to capture the event.
DeleteWe have many birds fly into our windows here, maybe having three feeding stations dotted around and sparrowhawks visiting causing everything to dash everywhere and anywhere.
Normally the wood pigeons seem to love to splat on my windows, especially when I've just cleaned them!
i'm convinced the wood pigeons fly like they are drunk to avoid predators, they are horrible flyers. when we had bird food tables they would always miss landing on them and fall off :p
DeleteWhat wonderful photos - I've never seen a robin making itself cosy inside a wall before. It must have been lovely to listen to them "chatter" to each other.
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed Louise and I have to admit I have never seen anything like it either, so was very happy that I caught it on camera:D
DeleteWhat a cutie! have a great week!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kelleyn, you have a great week too :D
DeleteI love robins!
ReplyDeleteI love this post!
All the best Jan
I am always watching although I do not always comment.
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures especially if you listen to the video as you look at these sweet birds!
