I'm showing you the view from my studio window today so that you'll forgive me for posting yet again unfinished work!
But just look at that sunlight and it's October.
I'm in such a rush to dash outside... but I have been up before the sun this morning to start some new pieces of artwork today, so it's not all bad.
I've had a sketch of Koi Carp drafted for a few days
(which seems quite appropriate as I'm going to use my Japanese paints)
I was unsure what to do first, whether the water background should be painted first or the fish.... a little like the scenario of the chicken and the egg.
Which comes first?

Which comes first?
I've taken the plunge (ha... no pun was intended but I'm liking that) and started on the water first.
I've also added rock salt for a water effect, but we'll have to see how that turns out.I used to use this technique when silk painting.
It's great if it works correctly.
I've also started another 'My week on a page'.
I really should come up with another title of this project because these pages appear every few weeks and certainly not weekly.
But I'm happy if I just complete a page, no matter how long it takes me.
I'm not sure you will be able to see the design and colours in these shots. But I'm happy if I just complete a page, no matter how long it takes me.
But as it progresses I'll be sure to share.
I'll also explain why I've included each particular item.
There's washing on a line, apples, a scrunchy, and Virginia creeper.
I'm off outside now to top up my Vitamin D before this weather disappears.
I'll also catch up later with the Paint Party Friday gang which Kristin and Eva kindly host each week.
Have fun and I hope the sun is shining on you too

wonderful under paintings! So full of potential. I take reassurance when I see artists I truly respect, such as yourself, still unsure of just how to start tackling a blank canvas... lets us all know that risk is healthy! Thank you for sharing
ReplyDeleteI'm always a little nervous at this stage Phoenix and then I get really nervous as the ugly teenage stage emerges, but then it turns into something not half bad if I'm lucky. I think we've always got something to learn which is a healthy growing process.
DeleteThank you for such kind words and I wish you many hours of happy painting ;D
the beginnings of something amazing!!!
ReplyDeleteOh you have such faith (hehe) bless you ;D
Deleteit looks very promising, the apples are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI hate to post unfinished work but I'm caught up with the lovely weather we're having, but I hope to get back to finish the page off soon.
DeleteI'm pleased with the apples so far.
Happy PPF to you
You have a nice working view. I suppose you love nature and create it in your art. Looking forward seeing them next time....
ReplyDeleteHappy PPF ♥
I love the view from every window Sirkkis, I'm very lucky and try to appreciate it every day.
DeleteI seem to love nature more and more as I get older. Maybe it's just that here I'm right in the middle of it.
I hope to finish off the paintings in the next few days, so I'll make sure I post them so that anyone who is interested from the PPF group, will be able to see how they turn out.
Happy PPF to you too.
WIPs are perfectly fine for showing off! I look forward to seeing your finished pieces and what a lovely view to have while working in your studio. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the view Alexandra, but sometimes it can be a little distracting. But I'm not complaining.
DeleteI've being playing again this afternoon and I'll certainly show the finished work once it's completed.
Have a great creative weekend
Ok, how about "My Life On A Page" instead of Tracey's. I don't know how she gets so much done, she amazes and inspires me, as I see she does for you too!! Hope all is well with you and the Muff, my friend. Hugs (can't wait to see the koi)
ReplyDeleteThat's a good idea Jenn, but I've just got an image flash before me of my life on a page... The page would have to be humongous to fit it all on! hehe
DeleteI am amazed by how much Tracey achieves and that's the stuff we hear about... I bet there are a lot that we don't get to see or hear about.
I've managed to produce lots more work since attending her class and I'm not so precious about it all. I'm enjoying the journey far more.
Muffy is well and gruffing at my feet as I type. I've no idea why... she's been out and fed so it must be cuddle time.
I'm a little nervous about the Koi, but I'll show how I get on during the next week or so. Hope all is well with you and your Mum... say Hi
Hugs backatcha
What lovely view - & it IS important to take advantage of the lovely days!
ReplyDeleteI've used rock salt on watercolour washes, & it generally does give a good effect. I enjoy seeing others' WIP - that's all I have some weeks as well! (OK, many weeks ....)
I think days like these are going to be few and far between soon. As soon as the low sun dips it gets very fresh and chilly so I'm making the most of it whilst it's here. I will be a long winter, so the longer we delay it the better.
DeleteI've taken the salt off the wash this afternoon and it's not as good as I would like but I'll leave it for now. I plan to start on the Koi next and maybe tweak the water at a later stage if all goes well.
I'll nip across to see your artwork (or WIP) soon.
Happy PPF to you
I totally get your apprehension about the salt... sometimes it gives glorious effects, and other times... well... the ugly teenage look. Timing, and the amount of moisture and pigment, is everything. I often misjudge the timing, or get over zealous and dump too much! Then drying time takes forever, especially if it is a humid day to boot. But I love the brush strokes visible in your water! Even if the salt disappoints this time (which I hope it does not!) you already have interesting texture going for the koi:-)
ReplyDeleteOk Minnemie, I've got the ugly teenage look with the salt. I took it off this afternoon and it's not as I would have liked. I suspect that I didn't have enough moisture on the paper but will leave well alone for now. I'll paint the koi next and see if I want to revisit the water effect later.
DeleteHumid days... hmm... oh how I'd like some of those although I can't complain as our weather over the last week or so has been brilliant. It's been better than throughout the whole summer.
Lovely to see your comment.
Have a great creative weekend and I hope that all of your family are well.
Thanks for sharing your fall painting. No we have no sun her just Hurricane Joaquin doing his worst!! happy PPF
ReplyDeleteEek... Hurricane Joaquin! I hope you and yours are all safe and well.
DeleteI've never been in a hurricane thankfully but when the wind blasts up here in Bonnie Scotland I often think about how terrifying it must be to be caught up in one.
Keep safe and happy PPF to you too
Fun beginnings you have here - have a creative weekend!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ginger... I certainly am having fun.
DeleteI wish you a creative weekend too
What a great art area. All that light and a wonderful view. Can't wait to see the finished Koi.
ReplyDeleteNicole/Beadwright
I'm very lucky to have such a great place to play Nicole, but sometimes I find myself just gazing out at the birds, garden and view beyond to the farmland.
DeleteI managed to remain focussed this afternoon and painted a little more, but I'll be certain to show the finished work once it's done.
Happy PPF to you
You go girl!!!! It really looks like a river outside your window. And the Koi? I looked at it and thought shark! shark! We have had a lot of shark attacks on the east coast this year. A 12 year old boy was bitten quite badly in 3 feet of water right here on the beach - not far from our house. Lovely autumn temps this morning. Although we have had a lot of grey skies this year and tons of rain, it is sunny this morning. We are being spared this latest hurricane.
ReplyDeleteSandy xx
Okay I will Sandy, hehe
DeleteI didn't know what you meant by the river, so I've looked back and realise that it's the dappled light from the tree in our garden. Now I see it does look like a river.
I did wonder if you'd been at the gin because first the river and then seeing shark's!
But I suppose when you hear news like that poor boy it would play on your mind.
That's incredible that it was in 3 ft of water and right near your house.
(Just don't go skinny dipping... actually it's no joking matter)
Hey, we've got gorgeous weather this last week... it's been better than during the summer so I'm a happy bunny. I love autumn anyway but this one has started brilliantly.
I'm glad to hear that you are missing the latest hurricane. Scary stuff.
Have a great weekend and I'll see you again soon.
I can't wait to see how those koi fish look when you finish. But you know when the sun is out and it is a gorgeous day you have to be outside in it! I love the bumblebee photo from the other day too!It is so spectacular.
ReplyDeleteMe too Erika (hehe) I just hope that I can make a decent job of them.
DeleteI've been outside most of today, but I did manage to nip into the studio late this afternoon and had a quick play. The salt is off the water now, but I'm slightly disappointed that it hasn't reacted as much as I would have liked. I mustn't have had enough moisture on the paper.
I'm happy to hear that you've managed to see some of my photo's. I also have a photo of a butterfly on the same plant. If you look at my Instagram (in my sidebar) you'll see it although it looks much better larger.
Have a wonderful weekend. Happy PPF to you
Wonderful wip that's what ppf is for!! Love the positioning of your koi and the journal pages is wonderful too.... clothes on the line is timeless classic yet only lasts a few months a year!! Rarely see it anymore...My mom always hung her wash!!...My daughters mother in law still does too!!
ReplyDeleteHugs Giggles
Thanks for your words of comfort about posting a WIP yet again.
DeleteI love to hang out my washing because we are quite high up on a hill here and I love to see them blow.
Sometimes it's a worry that they might blow so much that they'll end up in Norway, so I have to attach them with masses of pegs.
It's only a short season of hanging washing outside as the weather is about to turn soon, so that'll be it for a good few months.
Nice whilst it lasted.
You've reminded me about my Mum's thing about hanging the items on the line in descending order of size. I used to throw one in just to shake her up, but now I can't do it... they have to be in size order. I think I may have a problem by the sound of this :/
Great start, i think those koi will be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteOh I hope so... I may get to play later today. Wish me luck!
