Today we visited Glen Garioch Whisky Distillery (pronounced Geery in the ancient Doric dialect still spoken in these parts)
It is one of the oldest and most easterly operating distilleries in Scotland and has been making its mighty malt in the quaint and historic market town of Oldmeldrum, near Aberdeen since 1797.
There are guided tours at various times throughout the day.
We had Jane taking us back in time and passing on heaps of interesting information.
She really was passionate about the product and quite hilarious at times...I'm sure that there's nothing about this distillery that Jane doesn't know.
For a start she's worked here for some thirty years!
Obviously some information has to be kept secret and under multiple lock and key.
I'm not a whisky drinker, but I do know a man that is (not looking in any direction...Mr Natters!)
As is the custom at the end of these kind of tours, there is a tasting session.
I along with a few other ladies in the group had been nominated to be a designated driver, but the thoughtful Jane kindly provided little sample bottles for us to take home.
That way for all those who had drawn the short straw. could have a taste later.
I thought this was a very nice touch.
Meanwhile everyone else sipped and commented on the warm soothing subtleties.
Obviously, 'we' had to purchase our very own large bottle (12 year old, 48% ABV Cask: Bourbon and Sherry) so that we could do extensive research.
I say the Royal 'We' but you all know who I mean (wink wink).

In true Doric dialect I will leave you with the saying...

Looks great, the black and white picture looks very atmospheric.
ReplyDeleteI just wish this post had a scratch and sniff app Andy, because not only was it atmospheric but the smell was incredible.
DeleteLooks like a fantastic place to visit!
ReplyDeleteIt was so interesting even if you don't like whisky. I love hearing and seeing how things used to be done and how they've progressed. I adore history.
DeleteIt looks like a very professional set up despite the age
ReplyDeleteOh it certainly was...very professional and steeped with history. Plus then a fantastic product at the end!
DeleteWe love doing tours like this, I love the first photo
ReplyDeleteThank you for linking up
I was so pleased with the end result Darren because I took that photo through glass!
DeletePretty sure I have or have had a bottle or two of Glenn Garioch. Never visited a distillery oddly, really must get around to it. Your images make me want to. #MySundayPhoto
ReplyDeleteI'm pleased that I've done a good job on helping promote Glenn Garioch. It was such a great friendly organisation. I can't comment on the product yet because I've been on antibiotics, but I have three little samples to try once I'm able :D
DeleteA visit to a distillery is such a fun but also interesting activity. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough it was my hubby's idea to visit, but I really enjoyed it. Such a friendly approach and masses of interesting history and equipment. Cheers to you too :D
DeleteA fascinating post and what great photos! I like the half-constructed barrel.
ReplyDeleteOh yes that was so interesting Debra. We've been to a few distilleries and have always had a great day...and I never took a drop honest!
DeleteIt must be so interesting especially if they've kept some of the traditions on from the 1700s!
ReplyDeleteThere are lots of the history here...from back then, up until the present day. It's all about the old ways which still work perfectly. Tradition is the key.
DeleteNot a whisky drinker either, but would still be neat seeing everything on the tour :) and that is a nice gesture giving the DD some bottle to try later
ReplyDeleteIt was indeed Jennifer. I don't really drink whisky either but I know a man that does! It was so interesting and full of the old traditions, buildings, equipment and photographs.
DeleteFun to see the old keg style ones too
ReplyDeleteIt was full of historical equipment, traditions and interesting things to see.
DeleteWhat fun! Did they have any cold beer hanging around!
ReplyDeleteSandy xx
I have to admit I didn't see any cold beers Sandy. It was rather a cold day so the warming liquid gold went down a treat with most of the visitors. I've yet to try mine as I've been on antibiotics.
DeleteI wouldn't do the Whisky either but count me in for double cheese!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks a great visit!

They had lots of beautiful products in their shop...I took quite a fancy to the specialist shortbread biscuits and there were beautiful thick warm blankets...all perfect for the winter months ahead.
DeleteThat looks like it was an interesting tour. I love the fact that the drivers got to take some home - usually you miss on on tasting when you have to drive. I quite like a nice scotch whisky - it does look very inviting with the cheese :-)
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a great idea...no one missed out. Very thoughtful on their part. I love the gold liquid colour and yes I agree it looks very inviting!
DeleteLooks and sounds a wonderful tour, loved seeing all of your photographs.
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thanks Jan...I'm happy that I gave the tour a good enough review and that you enjoyed it. They certainly deserved it and I should say that I wasn't paid for it! Not even in the gold necture! (hehe)
DeleteI remember visiting Bushmills distillery and this really reminds me of that. What great photos x #Mysundayphoto
ReplyDeleteAhh...the Irish whiskey. I'm glad you like the photos. I enjoyed the visit and sharing it.
DeleteThis looks really interesting! I would love a place like this. Wonderful photos. Look forward to seeing you tomorrow on #mysundayphoto
ReplyDeleteWe are full of history and traditions up here Martyn, from over three hundred castles in Aberdeenshire to 98 active malt distilleries in Scotland. I'm glad you enjoyed seeing my photos. It was a great day out.
DeleteVery cool shots!
