I've had a notion since winter started that I'd sit by the fire knitting at some stage.
Don't ask me where this notion came from...it just seemed to conjure up a cosy picture. I knew that I had some knitting needles somewhere but hadn't a clue where they might be.
Over the weekend they appeared.
Typical as spring is about to burst forth, I finally get my act together...talk about Tail-end Charlie.
I knew it had been some years since I last knitted and I've just realised how long it's been.
The wool is from when my son was born...or I should say before he was born.
The baby blue gave it away and that was probably the last time I picked up a knitting needle...over 21 years ago!
I was never a proficient knitter it has to be said, but I do like the process.
You can sit comfortably, cosy, with mind and hands just doing their thing whilst even watching the TV if you don't mind the odd slipped stitch!
(That last statment is purely my level of skill)
(That last statment is purely my level of skill)
At first I hadn't a clue what to do, but as I picked up the needles and wool something happened. I rode that bike again...or should I say I started to knit.
I managed to remember how to work the rib (knit one, purl one...oh listen to me...like a true pro?) then I had the challenge of changing to knit a line, purl a line!
It just got easier until I looked back to discover a very raggedy piece of work.
I then remembered that I should have started with a smaller pair of needles for the rib. Whoops too late now. Or should that be the other way around???
But I must remember that this is only to have a play, so Muffy need not worry that she'll be the laughing stock of the park in one of my home knitted jumpers.
It'll probably go into hiding once again when I've done or possibly keep growing into the longest scarf in living memory, due to me not knowing how to end it!
Just a brief update on the renovation of the windows and doors...we are over half way now and thankfully the sanding down seems to be tailoring off.
But what to do with all the old frames...well chop them up of course!
Thankfully someone liked doing this job...just call him Mr Chopchop.
As you can see there's lots of safety gear and rules, but I have to say I still can't watch.
We are aware that all that wood was sitting around the gas tank, but thankfully that's all sorted now.
And finally I thought you might like to meet the renovation gang...
There's nothing better than a cup of tea or coffee to keep the troops happy...well maybe a piece of home baking too perhaps?
That reminds me it's nearly time for the next one.
Happy Blue Monday to you all...

Have fun!
I can't knit for toffee! I've been taught five or six times but I just can't grasp it, so your blue knitting looks like magic to me.
ReplyDeleteMr Chopchop is wearing Liverpool trousers - this makes me very happy :)
Hope the wrist and ribs are better now
x
Hahaha...neither can I Laura ;D
DeleteI just like the idea of relaxing, warm and cosy whilst hearing the click click click of the needles. It could be something from my childhood because my mother was a great knitter and my grandmother loved to crochet.
So I suppose it's probably in my genes.
Mr Chopchop is indeed wearing Liverpool trackies although they are rather old now. I haven't mentioned the actual team that my 'boys' support, in case it sways my followers but you read the signs correctly!
Thankfully I'm getting there on the injuries side of things, although having a full frozen container (3 litre) of milk land on my foot this morning didn't help!
Thanks for stopping by...I love visitors even though the place is a little topsy turvey at the moment.
Have a great day!
xoxo
I too recently picked up my knitting needles after many years and I'm enjoying myself so much. Part of the pleasure is the knitting (or course) but part of it is social. I found a little knitting "drop in" group at the local yarn store. Nice bunch of folks show up every week, bring knitting and chat for a couple of hours. Great time.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure I'd be up to social knitting circles Darla, but it does sound like you enjoy your get-togethers. It's a great idea ;D
DeleteI feel that I'd like something similar with an art or pottery class...I'm tempted to join one as soon as things settle down here.
Thanks for visiting my place even though we're a little noisy and chaotic at the moment. Your visits keep me sane!
Have a fantastic day whatever you get up to...have fun!
xoxo
Hi Nessie,
ReplyDeleteI'm another used-to-be knitter. I know I'll never try again as I gave away my knitting needles and yarn when we moved. I too wish that I'd been more successful. I wish you well.
Happy Blue Monday!
I don't have great hopes of producing anything that will be worn by man or beast Sally. I just wanted to have a 'go' after finding the yarn and needles.
DeleteSome of the needles were my Mothers so I couldn't throw them away.
Happy Blue Monday to you and thanks for hosting once again
xoxo
Knitting is too difficult for me :)
ReplyDeleteIt can be a little tricky but honestly if I can manage a few stitches then anyone can. You should give it a try Lina ;D
DeleteMine may end up in the dog basket but I will have relaxed and enjoyed the process. Or that's the plan.
Thanks for stopping by...I love to have visitors. It's keeping my sane whilst all this mayhem is happening around me.
Have a wonderful week!
Love the knitting... me too ...I had not knitted since my children were small... took it back up 2 years ago to make some scarfs for Christmas....Love knitting just wish I was better at it....my daughter is due her first baby in May so I've been making a some baby cardigans...I need more hours in a day though...Take care... Hugs May...PS wee muffin would look good in blue (just saying)... x x
ReplyDeleteOh May, I'm under no disillusionment that I'd ever be able to knit a gift for someone.
DeleteI'll be happy if I just end up with a doggy scrap to put in Muffy's basket...even she may reject it if I don't improve my skill.
You have such an exciting time ahead. May is going to be a big month for your family. I hope all goes well and will be watching for news and lots of details when your grandchild arrives ;D
Hugs back to you...and yes Muffy looks good in blue...well in anything really. Have I mentioned that I've never liked her (just saying!) ^..^

Hello Neesie - remember me? Finally get the hang of getting around the comment thingie! I know the feeling of picking up the yarn needles (do you call them that?) after 20 or more years! I guess what mothers do. They knit for their babies and then forget about them when babies grow up... Good luck with the renovation. I know someone's first mosaic piece was an old window frame. If you haven't chopped them up, someone may want to use them and be for ever grateful to you:) Have a happy week!
ReplyDeleteOf course I remember you ;D
DeleteYarn needles and knitting needle are one and the same.
I think knitting is one of those activities that lends itself to sitting quietly whilst waiting for the precious package to bake, but once the little one arrives then its full on for the next 20 years so no time for knitting!
I'm keeping a few of the window frames to use as cold frames for my seedlings once my green fingers sprout!
I hope you have a happy week too and it's great that you've popped in to comment. I really appreciate your time :D
xoxo
I love to knit but haven't in a while. Need to find a pattern to inspire me. Something quick to get motivated.
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by and visiting me, much appreciated!
Pattern! PATTERN! Nobody mentioned there should be a pattern Jackie! ;D
DeleteHave a wonderful week and thanks for stopping by.
Hi, Neesie, and it's so nice to meet you! Oh, how nice to be getting new windows and glad to hear you have a wood chopper too! ;) Lots of cute mugs to sip from. Thanks so much for popping in to see me.
ReplyDeleteBe a sweetie,
Shelia ;)
Hello Shelia,
DeleteThanks for popping in and leaving a lovely comment. It is nice to see the finished windows but the noise, chaos and general mayhem before they're finished can be a little testing to say the least.
We're well over half way now so the end is in sight...well for the windows and doors anyway. Then it's on to the next project!
The woodchopper has gone AWAL today but he'll be back and busy soon I hope ;D
Have a wonderful week!
I get an urge to crochet now and then but it's been ages since I have made anything. Maybe one day, but I wouldn't hold my breath. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm not holding my breath either...on the actual making of something or indeed anything!
DeletePersonally I think I just like to click the needles.
It's relaxing but I'm sure I'd be as tight as a drum with stress if I was trying to make something to be worn.
I tried to crochet a little mat like my Grandmother used to make (I think they may have been doilys) but it just grew into a frilly circle that just kept getting bigger and frillier!
Have a great week and thanks for stopping by my place.
It's been great to see you
;D
Used to crochet earlier - maybe I'll take it up again too, just as soon as I've finished my current novel!
ReplyDeleteGreat photos.
Ohhh...novel...that sounds interesting Lola. What you reading? In always interested in hearing what people are reading ;D
DeleteAs I've mentioned my crocheting skills are even worse than my knitting skills (ha...listen to me...I certainly shouldn't use the word skill when talking about my crafting!)
I think I'll stay with drawing/painting.
Thanks for visiting my space...I hope to get to visit soon too.
In the meantime have fun and maybe find that hook once more?
Hi Neesie, that is just fantastic that you picked up the needle again! I can't wait to see what you make!
ReplyDeleteJulie at Julie's Lifestyle
Hi Julie,
DeleteOh please don't wait for anything that I might produce...it certainly wouldn't be worth the wait. I'm not sure I'm even making anything! I'm just clicking away ;D
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a lovely comment...it's great to have you visit.
Enjoy your week whatever you get up to...have fun!
Neesie, I am hopeless with needles, but I do so love your blue yarn! Looks like you are a busy lady. Hope the renovation goes smoothly.
ReplyDeleteHappy Blue Monday!
xo
Sheila
I'm not so clever with the needles either Sheila ;D
DeleteBut it was nice to sit and reminisce about my Mother and Grandmother whilst I tried to remember how to do it. Once I relaxed into it it all came back to me.
Somewhere in the back of my mind (a very scary place) the technique came back...either that or my Mum was guiding my hands :D
I hope you had a Happy Blue Monday and apologise it's taken me this long to reply to your lovely comment.
I love to have visitors so thank you for your precious time...I appreciate it.
I haven't knit for many years. About all I am good for is scarves and blankets, but I have had the urge to knit a scarf this winter. Maybe it's because it's so frickin cold I could use one inside some days--ROFL! ;) That looks like pretty, soft yarn. I hope all your work will be done soon.
ReplyDeleteHey Rita, I'll be lucky if a scarf comes out of this little project. It just shows how desperate I was to create something. I'm really missing my artwork :(
DeleteThe cold and knitting certainly seem to go together.
Oh you do sound like you've been freezing...but hopefully it's getting better with each day.
I've noticed that it's just becoming daybreak now when we get up in the morning which helps pull my reluctant body from the bed. We've also had to change the time when a lamp comes on by a whole hour, so that it's not coming on whilst the sun is still shining!
Drills, hammers and the strong smell of paint aren't the best for having visitors so please forgive me and thanks for putting up with it all ;D
Stay cosy and wait for spring...it's surely coming soon
Have a wonderful week.
xoxo
Beautiful blue wool!
ReplyDeleteIt is a fantastic blue...it matched my sons baby blue eyes! ;D
DeleteHe still looks great in blue even though his football team wears red!
Thanks for visiting my place and I hope to pop across to you soon
Have a great week
Enjoyed your chatty post as always Neesie, and it looks as though you will be all set for enough firewood for next winter.
ReplyDeleteAnd now, you are not just a Neesie who Natters, but a Knitter who Natters. You didn't say what your newly-started piece of knitting will be …. a tea-cosy to get you back to the craft, or a blanket to jump straight into a long-term job?
Hello Jez,
DeleteIt's always great to see you in my inbox ;D
Well yeah there's a lot of wood around us in various forms from big tree branches, lady logs chopped professionally, and rotten window frames!
Oh you are such a clever bunny...I like that Neesie Knits whilst she Natters LOL
I didn't say what my knitting will be because basically its not going to be anything by the look of it!
TEA-COSY oh I wish! My Grandmother used to knit those ribbed ones and I really should have paid more attention when she was showing me. I really don't hold out any hope of anything more than a thin, narrow dog blanket or maybe that should be flannel size!
It's been a laugh if nothing else. It just shows how desperate I am for my creativity to come out....oh I miss drawing/painting :(
I am behind with my blogging visits but I hope to catch up soon. I hate to think I'm missing everything.
See you soon but in the meantime...have fun and a fantastic week
xoxo
How wonderful that you picked up your needles again! The knitting world has changed dramatically in recent years - I hope you catch the bug and continue :-)
ReplyDeleteI know...it surprised me too ;D
DeleteI can't see that I'll be knitting intricate patterns or fairisle jumpers but it is a start...knit a line, purl a line (lol)
Thanks for stopping by Hannah it was great to meet you.
Have a great week!
