My Sunday Photo... Winter Sky

It seems that since we have started a new trend recently of naming storms that come to our shores, they have taken on a new force. It's like with their new identity they are more powerful.
Take for instance the latest one that arrived in the early hours of yesterday....Gertrude.
She was obviously very full of herself and vented full anger on us.
Maybe she was menopausal or had had some terrible misfortune because oh boy was she angry!
For the first time I could actually feel the house tremble whilst she whipped herself up into a frenzy. We have large trees on our property and I had some very vivid thoughts about them coming to call, quite literally, especially with having had so much rain recently... I mean that came weaken roots and softening the ground surely?
Frank ... the storm before Gertrude brought floods like Aberdeenshire has never seen before.
So maybe we should stop this new trend and revert back to the old ways.
Let's concentrate on saying farewell to winter and welcome spring.
I captured this winter sky whilst out walking one crisp cold morning last week.

  1. The storms have been crazy and the names are awful.
The clouds look like they are kissing!

    1. They have indeed been extremely harsh storms and I believe yet another is on it's way. Storm Frank looks equally angry.
Now that I look at the photo Amanda, it does look like those clouds are kissing.

  2. Hope you didn't get too much of a battering with the storm and fingers crossed that spring is not too far away now. Those clouds look quite dramatic in the photo but there's a sense of calm there too.

    1. Well Storm Frank is about to arrive tomorrow Louise, so I think spring will have to wait a little while longer.
I took this photo whilst out walking one morning and it was sort of the eye of the storm.

    1. It was spectacular Victoria, but I have to say I don't think my photo really did it justice.

  4. I rather hope we are done with the storms for a bit, from Scotland to Cornwall I think it has been quite a winter, I love the colour contrasts of your winter sky

    1. Well I'm afraid Storm Frank is on it's way tomorrow... so baton down the hatches once again.
Sky, clouds, sunrises and sunsets are a few of my favourite things to photograph.

    1. We've had the odd positive signs and all the bulbs are sprouting, but we have Storm Frank coming to call tomorrow.
I just hope this will be the last one.

  7. Storm Getrude was rather vicious wasn't she? It was awful here for a couple of days but I think you guys had it a lot worse up there. May Spring and sunshine hurry up :)

    1. Oh yes please because since your comment Tas we've had yet another storm. Storm Henry... who was just full of wind!
I hope it wasn't too bad for you.
Come on spring... get a move on.

  8. Y'all have sure been taking a beating this winter. I hope you have a glorious spring after all the nasty storms of winter. It's amazing tho, how beautiful a cloudy sky can be at times. Hugs

    1. Haven't we just Nan,
They started to name the storms back in November '15 with Abigail. They are naming the storms alphabetically and we've just said goodbye to storm Henry! So that's quite a few in just a few months!
I need spring to come and visit soon.
Some of the plants and birds have been really confused. I've even a few brave daffodils opening up!
      Hugs back to you

  9. Maybe they think it is easier to remember a name than a date? I don't know why they give them names, either. I hope you have seen the last of the bad storms.

    1. Possibly Rita, but now I know that they are naming the storms alphabetical with the first back in November '15, we know just how many have come to call. We've just said goodbye to storm Henry. That's quite a number of storms in just a few months!
There's thankfully no talk of an 'i' storm coming, so hopefully maybe spring will be on it's way.

  11. Down here in the South East we have got off pretty lightly in respect of the Winter storms. We have had a few rough days, but nothing really damaging, and only very minor flooding. People joke about weather being the main topic of conversation in Britain, but in all honesty it dominates our lives and affects us all, so it is worthy of discussion. I don't suppose you have been out in the garden much just recently!

    1. I vowed when I returned to the UK, that I wouldn't constantly comment or moan about the weather. All good intentions, but I'm afraid I didn't last long. Last summer was the worst summer that I've know for quite some time. Then this winter we've had the worst flooding on record and eight storms in just three months!
I think there's a good chance that I might even be suffering from SAD's now.
As to gardening... you're right Mark, I haven't been out there much over the last few months. I did have one session for some much needed tidying. It was fantastic to get outside for a few hours and amazingly the sun came out!
Let's hope spring comes to call soon because it's all very confusing for the plants and birds, never mind me!

  12. Talking of names, I notice a flash new signature very swish! Let's hope Gertie has gone for good and you have a calm, soothing weather lady approaching, I'm going to suggest an Arabella, she sounds lovely for spring :) Great pic

    1. Hehe I knew you'd notice Wren. There's not much gets passed you eh?
I had my good friend Jenn over at http://www.justaddwatersilly.com/ help me out. Isn't she clever. It was all too techy for me.
Well we've just said goodbye for storm Henry. Apparently they are alphabetical. Abigail was the first back in November '15, so we've had eight storms in just three months and they've been quite forceful. Henry was just full of wind (saying nothing more here)
I really need spring Wren... can you have a word please?

    1. All is well here Donna thanks, especially now that we've said goodbye to storm Henry. Eight storms in three months is really unprecedented.
There are the odd signs of spring, which is confusing the birds and plants.

    1. Well unfortunately it was only the eye of the storm Erica,
We also had another storm come to call this week. Storm Henry!
I do hope spring comes soon because eight storms in three months is seven storms too many for me.
      Come on spring!

  16. i wondered if it was a new thing naming storms. we have been naming cyclones here for years as you probably know. it does seem to give them extra power:) great photo neesie.

  17. The weather has changed so much in the UK since I lived there. Never had storms like you are having now. Very disturbing. Still such a beautiful place to reside. Your photo is haunting ... instead of two clouds kissing, I see the formation of a deformed hand ready to snatch the head off the other. hmmmmm ... hugs, Donna
