Inspiration... Slate Painting for PPF

Do you find inspiration in the strangest and most unexpected of places.
It can sometimes just hit you when you least expect it.
Well, that's exactly what happened to me today.
I hadn't had time to create any artwork this week and was feeling a little disappointed, but I had managed to tick off quite a few jobs off my Christmas to-do list.
As I was putting things away in the studio, I saw this blackboard pussy cat chalk image hanging on the back of the door.
It's an old drawing that my daughter had done and left behind.

It got me thinking about the black background and I thought I'd like to try painting on a roof slate.
We have had lots of roof tiles changed on the house, since we came home and the surplus are sitting around... just waiting to be painted!
I didn't have much time today to start painting, but I did start and I'm quite excited about the effect.
It's a follow on to the snow scene that I did a few weeks ago.
I hope to finish it over the weekend.
I'll be adding the progress here over the next few days.
Have you found inspiration in an unexpected place?
As usual I'm linking up with Paint Party Friday
Thanks once again Eva and Kristin for hosting the link up your great inspirational blog.

Late addition... here's a little progress on the slate painting.
I am loving seeing the effect, but it's also a little scary because I have no idea where this will lead.
I'm going to link up with Alexandra over at her Blue Chair Diary blog.
Alexandra is creating illustrations for her very own Christmas Illo Advent and she has some fantastic cute illustrations if you'd like to nip across.
I hope you have had a great weekend.
Thanks for your visit and I hope to see you again soon.

  1. Great idea, it's fun to work with chalks and a slate. I still miss the blackboard after 35 years teaching! Hugs, Valerie

    1. Thanks Valerie, I don't know where the idea came from to use the spare roof tiles, but I'm loving the textured surface. I'm using acrylic ink which seems to be working well so far.
My daughter has a blackboard and easel which I can't resist doodling on when I stay.
Wow 35 years teaching... I hope you got a medal at the very least!

  2. Love your daughter's cat! I've never done anything on slate. My mother used a slate when she was a young girl in elementary school. We had slate blackboards when I came along.

    1. Thanks Faye, I thought the cat was cute too. He is chalked onto a black board, but I'm painting using the spare roof tiles with acrylic ink paints. I love the rough texture.
It's certainly different than painting on paper!

  4. Don't you love it when inspiration strikes unexpectedly just by seeing something? I love how the texture of the slate is visible through the paint. Looking forward to what else you'll do with it!

  6. Your daughter certainly captured a cat's personality! Those tiles are what is on your roof?!!? I bet your house is a dream come true. I remember when you were remodeling a bathroom. Be happy sweet friend - you live in a dream house with the most perfect puppy (she will always be a puppy you know) Your kids are grown and obviously talented. And you are a gifted artist in your own right!

  14. The best inspirations come from the strangest places and that is probably what makes them the most fun. As for your late addition ... you could stop there and be happy, couldn't you? Your slate painting is awesome. And, what is cool, is , if I heard you right, you have more slate waiting to become art. Awesome, Neesie ...

  15. What a fantastic idea for a snowscape! I think it's already beautiful. You have to save a few of those slates to paint something with a Halloween theme.
