Friday Frog... PPF

I'm so late posting today, but quite frankly I'm just thankful to be here at all.

 (sorry that sounds rather dramatic doesn't it? ... let me explain) 

Basically, yesterday I couldn't even get out of bed! 

Literally!

I've heard and even used the term "I have a bad back... I couldn't get it off the bed", but this time it was true! I have no idea what happened, but after a sleepless troubled night, I found that I just couldn't move one way or another. Excruciating pain had me completely in it's grip.

The pain was untrue and if there had been a gas and air option, then I'd have grabbed it with both hands. One minute I would be laughing at the absurdity of the situation and the next shedding a few tears, because basically I was so scared that I just couldn't move. 

Hubby wanted to call an ambulance, but I managed to persuade him not to and finally, thankfully I managed to stand vertically. Which is just as well because by this time I needed to visit the bathroom (desperately) and I didn't like hearing my hubbies different options of dealing with this problem!

Enough said!

I normally try to be positive on my blog posts because I think everyone has their own issues, health worries, problems and generally don't need other people's troubles, but if you are suffering in any way with pain or worries, I hope you find a way of dealing with them, or that they disappear completely.

So finally let's get onto the business in hand... what have I managed to create this week.

I've had appointments which have eaten into my creative time, but if you remember the silk paintings from my post last week, I've taken the tropical tree frog design and drawn this cheerful chap...

I've still got to add a few details and to rub out the pencil marks, but he makes me smile.

I'm aware that I had lots of lovely visitors last week and that I haven't got around to visiting you all... yet... but I will.

Silks and seeds... PPF

We'd been looking through a box of old photographs during my daughters visit last weekend, when I came across the old photograph below. 

I thought you might like to see it.

It's from my Brunei days, where I was luck enough to be invited to exhibit my silk paintings. 

In fact, it's possibly the only photograph that I have from this particular exhibition.

It's a pity that the photograph is so bad, but it was taken a few years ago. 

In fact, I've just gone into shock because looking at the date on the paintings... it says '1995' which means that it was 21 years ago!

No wonder the photos are so bad!

Not only is it probably the camera that I was using at the time, but it's also probably due to the fact that I've just had this photo among many other's... all loose in a box.

You'd have thought that I'd have placed it lovingly in an album.

To savor the moment, but no. 

I can only think that I was probably preoccupied with my three year old at the time, who was rather challenging to say the least. 

My mind wasn't my own for a good few years back then.

In fact, these few paintings possibly saved my sanity.

But that's a whole other story.

If you can use your imagination here please, because they were actually extremely vibrant colours. 

That's one of the reasons why I loved to paint with silk paints.

This chap was one of my hubby's favourites.

Nee...deep... nee...deep!

Unfortunately, I haven't had much free time this week for being creative.

When I did have some free time, I chose to go out into the garden and plant seeds.

I'm hopeful of great things to come. 

I don't think we'll be self sufficient, not by a long way, but I love to pick our own produce.

What's On Your Work Desk..(WOYWW #180 I think...?)

I unfortunately missed the eclipse of the sun this morning, but I don't think I'd have seen much here in Melbourne anyway and it did only last 2 minutes and 5 seconds!

The best viewing advantage would have been in Queensland's tropical northeast. It was the region's first total solar eclipse in 1,300 years and thousands of visitors have flocked to the region booking everything from hot air balloons to dive boats to watch the phenomenon.

But one other phenomenon I wasn't going to miss today is the WOYWW (What's on your Work Desk). 

I've been AWOL for a few weeks on holiday ~ I know terrible isn't it? 

But it's about time I settled back down now and return to my normal routine. Normal 'ha' who am I kinding?

I haven't much to show on my desk this week because I've been trying to catch up on all the exciting domestic chores! Don't you just love them? :$

Although having said that I did manage to start a silk painting...of a sunset 

You can just see it standing against the wall.

 The studio is finally the same temperature as the rest of the house so it's easy to just walk in and pick up a paintbrush or pen...so there's no excuse now ;D

Edinburgh skyline at Sunset....

I never imagined for a minute that I'd pick up a paint brush during this last week, never mind actually begin to paint...especially after only just settling back home after our holiday!

But when I saw this photograph that my daughter took using her phone through the office window of the Edinburgh skyline, I thought it would be great to reacquaint myself with my silk paints. 

Well the ironing mountain had reduced (slightly) and the cases have all been unpacked and put away... 

So why not paint?

Fantastic isn't it?

(Don't forget it's through glass and on her phone ~ she wanted me to mention that....)

I had thought to include it in Jenn's Artist Play Room  with this week's theme being sunsets...

but one...I was too late (what's new?) and two...it is only a work in progress!

Let me tell you I feel very vunerable at this stage of the post because I hate to show unfinished work...

It's a little like showing someone your 'intimates' (underwear) drawer'!

But here goes....

It was very strange opening the box containing the paint pots because some of them haven't seen the light of day for about 12/13 years! 

They all looked so used and loved and I remember we had such great times together. 

It was like meeting really old friends that you haven't been in contact with for years and firstly feeling rather awkward. 

As I picked up the crinkled tubes they fitted in my hand but felt strange. I knew they'd moulded to my grip in the past and we'd had many hours of sheer bliss together, where everything else had been forgotten for a while....but they didn't feel comfortable anymore. I suppose it will take time to re-establish a rapport.

It was like shaking someone's hand for the first time...you never know how it's going to be...whether a strong grip with a definite shake or a limp, whoosy, shy touch or a gentle squeeze. 

I know we need to spend some quality time together and hopefully that will happen...then hopefully we may return to our special relationship. 

But there again maybe it's time to move on...it was good whilst it lasted but I should try a different media? 

Time will tell....

So here's what I did...please remember it's still unfinished and needs quite a lot more adding to it but at least it's a start!

The wispy lines in the bottom right hand corner and the window lights are actually gold, but it's difficult to see that from the photo. 

So there you are...I've even shown you my 'intimates'...can you believe it!??!?
I won't say now you show me yours for obvious reasons () LOL

What's on Your Work Desk ~ WOYWW #171

It's WOYWW time again everybody.. Get ready... and open your door to  let visitors in from all over the world to see what you've been up to....creatively that is and what's happening on your workdesk! 

If you're new to the term WOYWW (What's on your Workdesk Wednesday) or just here for the first time then you'll wonder what on earth I'm referring to...but this is the brainchild of Julia's blog at Stamping Ground.

So if you want to see lots of creative artists and crafters work just nip over to take a look at desks from all over the globe. There's so much talent and inspiration waiting plus they're a friendly bunch and would love to see you.  

 So what's on my desk this week....Well I'm in the process of moving back into the studio...I know...YAY!

At last I can have the dining room table back. The weather has been so springlike this week with beautiful blue skies and warmer temperatures that I thought I'd take a risk and move back.

The trouble is that everything has just landed on the desk as you can see and I've yet to sort!

I'm also trying to be more organised this week because basically over the last few weeks I think I'd lost the plot...so with that idea in mind I'm always impressed when anyone can assimilate two challenges into one post and would like to show you another silk painting from my previous life...this one will fit perfectly into the Artists Play Room theme for this week. Jenn at Just Add Water Silly sets a challenge each week and this week's theme is 'Juicy'.

Immediately I thought of lucious juicy fruit but then at the bewitching hour of 4.30am I remembered that I had a silk painting of cocktails. Darrrrdaaahhhhh!

I smile to myself when remembering this painting because we happened to live in a dry country at the time...but as most expats living there we had our own fully stocked bar and this painting was displayed on the wall behind it.

 (I'll retake this photo later today and try to get less reflection)

Before I go I must tell you that I've had a close encounter with a fellow WOYWWer! 

Yesterday I met up with RosC from Wild Cards on my Workbench 

It's incredible to think that WOYWW has introduced us to each other from the other side of the world.

We had such a lovely time and she even brought me a gift.

I'm now the proud owner of an adopted daughter of Gloria. Gloria by the way is a sourdough starter that Ros has been caring for for about a year now...eek...no pressure on me then?

I've yet to name my girl...any suggestions?

Both Ros and I realised just as we were saying goodbye that we should have taken photographic evidence of the event but we'd been too busy chatting...well I probably nattered far more than Ros truth be told! 

I just can't help myself...but we do plan to meet again so we'll hopefully organise photos then.

My apologies for such a long post today...I know Julia likes to keep our posts short to help with the desk hopping...so I'll shoot off now to start visiting all the peeps out there and see what they've been up to.

What's on Your Workdesk ~ WOYWW #169

It's WOYWW time again..can you believe it?  

For new visitors or anyone that hasn't heard of WOYWW (What's on your Workdesk Wednesday) basically it's the day to open your door and let everyone in to see what you're up to...

well on your workdesk that is! It's the brainchild of Julia's blog at Stamping Ground 

Visitors can come from all over the world....so be prepared....and get that kettle on!

In previous weeks I've been showing my work from the dining room table, but because I've actually been using my dining table this week as a place to eat...yeah I know fancy that...and I'm not quite back into the studio yet (even though Saturday is officially the start of Spring) I thought I'd do something different this week.
I thought because everyone seems to be amazed at how time fly's...
...I'd stop the clock and take my visitors back in time...back to the '90's!

I've mentioned to a few people during this past week about my time as a silk painting instructor and this photo shows two friends in our workshop. I'm hoping they don't mind me posting this photo of them because I had such fond memories of many hours being creative, inspiring and being inspired in lovely friendly company.

It was a very special time...

I decided to attend the classes initially to learn something new...it was a great way to spend one afternoon a week totally absorbed in doing something just for me! 

The silk painting classes were the first workshop I'd ever attended.
As with most expat communities the workshop was run voluntary and was part of the local social club.
I attended the classes for over a two years learning the new techniques and had such a wonderful time...even receiving commissions and the ultimate goal of sharing an exhibition with five other artists!
We even appeared in the local newspaper! LOL
See you didn't know I was a celeb did you?

After two years of learning the techniques the instructor was due to leave (as often happens in an expat community) and I was asked would I like to take over the classes. I had received so much from attending the workshops...how could I refuse...I needed to give back a little but the fact remains I still gained so much.

I couldn't let you go without showing you what I'm working on at the moment.
It's 'Willy Wagtail' (Rhipidura leucophrys) The name wagtail stems from the constant sideways wagging of the tail...which I've tried to capture in my drawing.
I know it's a little scary at the moment due to him not having any feet, but hopefully I'll get to that later today!
I'll come back and post another picture if I do finish him before WOYWW is over.

 Remember he's an unfinished piece of work please...
which I don't normally like to show but...hey...I know you now so I reckon it's okay!

Silk Painting... scarf

Did I say that I would do some silk painting earlier in the week? Well guess what? Surprise surprise....I didn't get a chance. The week just ran away with me yet again. How does it do that on such a regular basis?
So I thought instead of pretending that I'd never said anything about painting...and hoping you wouldn't come back and question me, but then I know you're too polite for that. I thought I could show you a new silk painting ~ well not exactly new ~ but new to you.
I thought I'd show you one I made earlier....really early in fact, in 2004 to be precise! My memory isn't that good...I'd never remember that it was that long ago, except that I've signed and dated it very discreetly in one corner ; )
I'm not sure if dating sometime is a good or bad thing....anyway here it is....Oh, but first it’s quite difficult to photograph and capture the vibrant colours or how best to display. Anyway, I hope you get the idea.

The scarf is about a metre square. 

Initially the scarf is raw white silk with a stitched boarder. Then the excitement starts as you add the paint....
Only three colours are added onto the silk...red, blue and yellow in random areas. As the paint spreads over the silk then the colours change.
If you mix two primary colours together, you create what is called a secondary colour. Mixing blue and red creates purple; red and yellow make orange; yellow and blue make green. The exact hue of the secondary colour you've mixed depends on which red, blue, or yellow you use and the proportions in which you mix them.

 The silk lends itself perfectly to this technique. Without any gutta (or resist) the paints are free to go whenever they wish.....changing colour as they meet and greet one another.

Once dry I then added gold paint over the top in a pattern. This definitely adds a little something to the design and finishes it off I think.

 I thought it would be great to give you a splash of colour today....I hope you like it and I promise to try and paint another in the near future. I can then take shots of the process.

Let the Painting begin... (Part 4)

I can't believe that I've started this 'Let the Painting begin' .... back in July and I still haven't managed to show you a new painting....and guess what?
Today is no exception...but I did find another one this weekend that I painted back in 1997.

I know waaaaaayyyy back!

I'm still playing with the silk paints and trying to get back into it...so its a question of watch this space, I'm afraid. By the way the shadow on the left hand side is from the chair I'd sat it on to take the photo....i'm not sure it'll be hung but at least its out of the box and seeing the light of day after so long.

I hope your week has started well and it'll be a productive one...whether you paint or not

Guilty...Case Closed

I want you to take a good look at this guilty suspect. 

Yes...really guilty isn't she as you can see by the ears, they're right down flat to her head.

Always a sign of guilt and then there's that look!

Who would guess just by looking at her that she was a well pampered pooch, that had just had a lovely bath after our morning walk.

"Look Me Lord ~ we have the footprints as evidence"...

Yet more evidence...the grubby water after the second bath.

There's no question ~ she's guilty! Case closed.

Hmm....I'm not amused as you can imagine.

After our morning walk and her bath, I turned my back for a second to get on with my next job and this is what happened.

I'm not sure if she was digging in the garden but she was certainly filthy. 

Now you can see why I can't get to paint....but psst.... there's some news on that front...I don't want anyone else to know just yet, but there's a little paint landed on my silk.

Shhh...keep it to yourself for now

Let the Painting begin....(Part 3)

Unfortunately this post isn't going to be as I would have liked....but I did open my big mouth and told you all about starting to paint again.....{note to self...keep your big mouth shut in future}
I could say that this is a tutorial and highlights just how careful you have to be with silk painting. And I'd obviously forgotten just how precise and careful you have to be.
Here is the painting at the stage when I placed salt onto the silk. This makes the paint absorb into the salt causing a really good effect.....I thought it would be really good on the sand.

It's so important to make sure that when you use the gutta for the design (Gutta is the restricting solution - like gum which stops the paints from mixing together) If you want to keep the paints seperate then the Gutta process needs careful attention, sealing all areas that you want the colours to be seperate. If you think about watercolours, they mix and run together, but with silk painting they can also mix and blend together in the same way, but also if you want to keep the colours seperate then use gutta to keep area's seperate. 

I hope this doesn't sound too confusing... : /

But then even with all my previous history and expertise, I made a gross error......

If you look to the right of the frame...my gutta line ends at the inside of the frame.....I could say I did this on purpose as a learning tool for you all ; ) do you believe me????

Nah.....I thought not. It's just its been so long since I did any painting, I'd forgotten this fundemental rule. Dah! But then that's why I did this trial silk to get all the blips out of the way.

I painted so far as my free time would allow and then left it to dry.....but when I returned....Grr... I was so cross with myself.

And here's the result.....

The paint bled over the frame and back into the picture....plus the sand bled into the sea....Sob, sob,

I'd obviously loaded the brush with too much paint, and it jumped over the gutta line. Another fundemental rule...that I'd left in the far depths of the right side of my brain.

So at least I've shown you and I feel so much relief that its now out there....Now unfortunately its back to the drawing board. But then artists aren't supposed to have it easy...are they?

Everything is left out in the studio in the hope I'll return. But I think I'll keep it to myself until I have something decent to show you....I may be some time.....

A Few Updates....

What a sporty weekend we're having....there's the fourth Rugby match blasting out here at the moment, as I try to hear myself type....we've had the football in between too, but the boys are happy, so I thought I'd nip in here with a quick update post.
I've not done one of these for a while so here goes.....
The main event is that we have a house guest. Yes, Zac arrived last night for his holiday, so Muffy's a happy bunny!

I couldn't resist snapping this shot of them looking through to the dining room. We were about to have a Sunday Roast and they weren't happy about not being included. They were sniffing all around the door frame trying to get the maximum smell if nothing else.

But then they did have their chicken dinner, so it all worked out in the end. Then the games commenced.... 

 I must try and get a video of all their antics. Its such fun to just sit and watch them at play. Today on our walk we tried using a joint lead (leash) It was so funny to see them trying to work it out, who got to take priority on which direction or sniff trail to follow.

At least you can see my handy work from the grooming course. I've had quite a few compliments on my handy work. Not sure how I'll get on when there's no experienced eye watching over me next time I have to clip her.

At the moment Muffin has just managed to fit into her bed. Zac has taken a liking to it, much to her disgust but well it is Zac, so she's curled up around him. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em. Anyone else would be given their marching orders.

Moving on with the update...remember the Flowering Hanging Mangers Well look how they've grown. They are still spreading out and only just coming to bud, but there's lots of potential there. I'll take another photo later in the season to show how they bloom {hopefully}

 And then the surprise news of the week....
I've been pottering about near the water tank off and on and noticed that every time I went near this particular spot, a startled dove would fly away. It happened so many times that I thought I'd take a peek and look what I found....

Unfortunately, I really had to take a few quick snaps not wanting to disturb the mother or the nest for too long. Apparently, they are notorious for abandoning the nest so I didn't want that responsibility. But the last news was my OH checked and the mother was sitting back on the nest so, so far all's well. They should be happy because we have a water bath which has fresh water daily and the huge seed block hanging near by. No need to scavenge here at this address. Unfortunately I was hoping that they may have spread the word to the lorikeets, but nothing happening there yet. But you never know?

I would love to give a final update on the painting but what can I say....no excuses I just haven't got back to it. I've managed to put the gutta on {the resist that stops the flow of paint over the silk - its like gum or glue consistency}and the design is done so we're beginning to get there, but it will be into next week before I can show you. Hopefully it will be worth the wait ; )

Let the Painting begin... (Part 2)

This is going to probably be the quickest post on record...well for me anyway.
I've just been trying to basically be wonder woman this week and why, oh why, did I say I'd paint?
There's one thing because I said it, I'm trying desperately to fit it in....which I know isn't the best way, but it might actually get me started.
I want to paint but there always seems to be other things to do first. I really need to be tough and to set it as a priority for a little while, until I get going anyway.
But hey.....the silk is stretched and looking very virginal which is a little scary - just waiting for me....

I was just about to get started and I realised I didn't have any masking tape in my art supplies. So I had to dash out to a local store to get some, which was an added extra job to hold me up, which I could have done without.

I've got a few ideas of designs but I think I'll just have a go first and get the mindset that this is a practice piece to get back into it. It doesn't matter what the first outcome is...just get something on that silk!

I'm hoping that way it won't be too scary or daunting. Wish me luck and if all goes well I'll let you see the outcome.

Let the Painting begin.......

It was rather a chilly wintry weekend, but there was such a lot going on here the weather didn't deter anyone, we just had to get on with it. For one thing it was the AFL Grand Final weekend, which here in Melbourne is BIG! For those of you who may not know and don't worry I won't point any fingers (in a hushed whisper....I'm not that into it myself...shock...horror!) the Australian Football or Aussie Rules game came to a climax with two teams - 'The Pies', Magpies or Collingwood (which ever name you prefer) as they are called played 'The Cats, or Geelong. Apparently it was a great game and there are still lots of discussions ongoing about it, even today. Its Mad Monday today and I think there's still celebrations and dressing up in costumes going on....Whoops I nearly forgot to say....Geelong won.
If anyone outside of Australia watched the final then they might be forgiven for not realising that it was being played in Australia. The heavens opened and people wore ponchos to help protect themselves from the elements. It was COLD!

Look what I found on our patio table yesterday....its a different sort of water feature, and shows just how much rain we had.

But today I'm as excited as some of those footy fans because this week is the week I'm determined to get sorted in the studio. I've started to round up the brushes and paints etc so its a start. My stomach does a little flip when I think I might actually get something done, but I haven't a clue what that might be yet.

I'll prepare everything and stretch the silk and see what happens.... 

I have a box of brushes that I haven't found yet...but I'm hoping they're here somewhere and not vamooshed like a few other things during the house move. The brushes I'm particularly interested in are my Chinese brushes....three in a box.

Here's some of my old faithfuls.... The large brush on the right is my favourite, so at least I've got that one.
Below are two other works I did a few years ago. The Chinese symbols represent the four seasons and also health, prosperity and love - I hope, if I remember rightly. It was a few years back, so please forgive me if I'm wrong.

If you click on the photo above to enlarge it, then you will see that I even wrote my name using the Chinese symbols. A Chinese friend later told me as she looked stunned when she saw it, that part of my name actually has the symbol for silk in it. Does that meant its meant to be?

Now for inspiration....any ideas anyone??? Shout up???? I need all the help I can get....

Another Silk Painting....Tree Frog

As I mentioned previously I'm experiencing being an empty nester this week, which has me thinking about what I'd like to do with my time moving forward.
The trouble is there's so much out there it can be a little daunting, but one of the things I'd like to do is get back to painting.
Whether it be silk painting, which at least I've had previous experience of, or maybe I need to try all the other different mediums out there, I'm not sure yet.
When I discovered this house had a studio {which was a wonderful but complete surprise} it made me think its a definite sign or tap on the shoulder....I've always dreamed of having a studio but never thought I'd ever get one - so it would seem ridiculous if I didn't use it. Right?

Silk Painting - Tropical Fish

At the start of this year, I had so many plans for what I wanted to do, achieve and experience...and here we are in July already!
But I didn't realise in January, that I'd have to squeeze in another house move, but that box (argh....not boxes again) has been well and truly ticked. Now I can move forward....
I've got a busy week ahead already (what's new?) but I've also something planned for the weekend, which I'm excited about. I'll be telling you later.... ; o
One thing that I've been thinking about is to start painting again. I haven't picked up a paintbrush for about 12 years....wow...where did that time go?
I learnt to silk paint whilst living in Brunei and I've always wanted to carry on....unfortunately the mindset, time, space and just generally my commitment have been lacking. But in this new house there's an actual studio!!!! How cool is that? It's as if its come to get me.....No more excuses.
Initially, I didn't really know what the room was intended for, until I saw the floor plan and there it states quite clearly 'Studio'.

During the house move, I found my art photo album and a newspaper article from an Exhibition. Six Ladies exhibited - all expat artists - me being one of them. Looking back at the photo's, they seem to be from another lifetime. I look so fit, healthy and YOUNG!
