Fruit and Veg....

Initially I wasn't sure if the pesky possums were the culprits who devoured our figs, but then I witnessed the frantic flight of a blackbird, when I came into the garden and caught him off guard...'Who me?' 'No siree'...
Not content with our grapes, they are also partial to fresh figs. Maybe he's trying to get his five fruits in...
Thank goodness my blueberries haven't come to fruition yet!

But then we share this planet, so I don't really mind especially when I hear him sing. I also picked a bowl full of figs earlier in the week, so we have enough for our needs. But these where the last two!

Devastation...

But it's not all bad news...I promised a little while ago that I'd show you my beans....what do you think?
Remember back in January when I planted them and they sprouted so quickly ~ well here they are...

 Not bad eh?

Do they usually grow this quickly?

(Yawn....) It's getting late and I've been busy in the studio today, so I need my beauty sleep now...I also want to try to finish my book. Oh so much to fit in and so little time!
I hope you're having a fun packed weekend...whatever you do keep smiling :D

  1. darn blackbirds , but they must eat too! Maybe you will have to net some of the fruit that you want to harvest to keep the birds off.
Beans are the fastest vegie I know to harvest, the more you pick the more that grow!!!

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy your time in the studio, I can't wait to see what you create!

    1. Hi Laurie...yeah quite a lot of people net their fruit. Maybe we'll have to think about that. But I do like the birds feeding too. I just don't want them getting too greedy ;)
I've got a surprise for you for next Wednesday ~ I'm so excited :D

  2. Your beans must be in just the right place with all the right things to make them grow. All you have to do now is to pick them while they are young, then they don't get tough and stringy. My father-in-law used to grow them as big as possible and they were horrid, hard and stringy, and really not at all nice. It put me off runner beans altogether. Yours look perfect right now. I hope you will forgive your blackbird, even if it was the last two figs. Have a good week in the garden. xx Maggie

    1. Oh thanks Maggie, I was wondering if to pick them now...we'll have them with our Sunday roast today. How exciting!
I really have been surprised by how quick they have grown. No pot of gold unfortunately! (Jack and the Beanstalk post http://neesienatters.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/jack-and-beanstalk.html)
I do forgive the birds (always a soft spot for them) especially the black birds because I never expected to find them here in Melbourne.
      Have a great weekend :D

  3. Hi, Neesie. Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my St. Pat's china cabinet. I hope you can track down your mom's bowl now that you remembered it. This post is lovely. We DO share this earth--in many ways, including the pesky birds who also sing.

    1. Hi Zuni, I think my sister may have the little jug and saucer if I remember rightly, but then I do have another equally cute little 'Duchess' bone china jug, so I can't complain.
Can you imagine a world without birds or birdsong? What a thought....so if I have to share then so be it ;)
      Have a wonderful weekend :D

  4. How lovely to have figs and beans growing now! It's still rather wintry over here. And if the bird has eaten your figs, he will soon be planting more!! Thanks for visiting my blog, come again! Hugs from Kaiserswerth in Rhineland, Valerie

    1. Hi Valerie,
Yes, it takes some getting used to being the opposite to Europe ie you're heading into Spring and we've just started autumn.
Especially being a Brit...having Christmas during the summer always catches me out!
You are certainly living in a beautiful part of the world. My husband and son have had a trip down the Rhine but I've never been, but I hope to one day.
Thanks for popping over ~ I really appreciate it :D

  5. What beautiful beans Neesie! We have fruit bushes and we cover them with nets to keep the birds away until we have had our own fill of them, then we leave the rest for the birds. The blackbirds have been busy nesting in our garden this past week. I love their song. It's so very pretty in the springtime. xxoo

    1. They were the last two figs Marie, so I didn't really mind. Plus the blackbirds are one of my favourite birds. I really am happy that the Victorian's brought them over here...
I agree with you, they have beautiful voices and I love to listen to their song.
I've picked about 16 beans today ~ Whoohoo! They look fine specimen's but we'll wait to see what they taste like.
I hope your Sunday is going well. We have a Bank Holiday tomorrow so we're having a lovely long weekend ;D xoxo

    1. Hi Lyn, I actually picked some of the beans yesterday (16 in fact) that will go into tonight's dinner.
I hadn't remembered just how quickly they grow, but I suppose the test will be how they taste...good I hope! :D

  7. Too bad about the figs, I keep meaning to try a fresh one but I think our store bought ones would be sad in comparison to yours. Your beans look delicious.

    1. Hi there, I hadn't tasted fresh figs until we came here...in fact I hadn't tasted any figs at all!
We'll be doing the beans taste test later today, so hope they taste as good as they look. ;)

  9. You have a beautiful garden and I bet you have a wonderful expat accent lol, I love the accent from your area. Is it like Kate Middletons?
They made a right old mess in your garden hey.

    1. Hi Bridget, I'm not sure about a wonderful expat accent... although quite a few people here have commented on my English accent. It obviously is a little different to an Ozzie one.
I certainly wouldn't say it's in Kate Middleton's league!!! LOL
